Cal State Fullerton is struggling to get to .500 early in the season, and the Titans have a long way to go to be competitive in the Big West Conference
Cal State Fullerton Men’s Basketball had high expectations to start the season with a brand new coach (Dedrique Taylor).
So far, the season has looked pretty bland for the Titans as they are having a tough time reaching the .500 mark this season.
In the month of December, the team was neither good nor bad, as they went 3-3. Their first win of December snapped a 5-game losing streak, but nothing is looking positive for the Titans.
The Wooden Legacy tournament at the end of November was a complete disaster for the host Titans. It resulted in three losses at their own court against Marquette, Miami (Florida), and the College of Charleston.
Their last game in 2013 also ended in an 83-64 loss to UNLV.
Currently, the Titans are sporting a 5-8 record heading into the New Year, and soon the team will be facing Big West opponents. Their 67.3 points per game needs to increase if the team is going to have future success.
In the first 5 games of the season, the Titans were averaging 82.2 points per game. In their last 5 games, the team is only averaging 70.6 points a game.
Senior Michael Williams leads the team in points per game with 14.8. Junior Alex Harris scores 12.6 a game for CSUF. These two players are the only ones who average double-digit points in a game this season.
One reason Cal State Fullerton has been dismal this season is due to their inefficiency in free throws. The team has only made 66% of their free throws this season, and has cost them a few games including against USC where the team shot under 39%.
If Cal State Fullerton wants to start to see success, the team must come together and shoot better on the free throw line. The depth and bench players must also start contributing with greater success.
If Cal State Fullerton does not find a way to increase success on the court, they will find themselves at the bottom of the Big West division this season.
