Hedo Turkoglu had been on the radar of the Los Angeles Clippers and head coach Doc Rivers for quite sometime. After an excellent workout last week, the deal was finalized by the team.

“I’ve always liked him. He can play the three and four. It’s a position that we can use in some ways, so we’re interested,” said head coach Doc Rivers on Turkoglu.

He played 53 games in returning to Orlando  for the 2011-12 season shooting 41% from the field, 71% from three point range, and averaging 11 points per game. In 2009, he helped the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard reach the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rivers raved about how well Turkoglu still shoots and how thoroughly impressed he was by his workout.

The termination of two 10-day contracts given to Maalik Wayns and Darius Morris will be done by Thursday. That allows the team to sign Turkoglu for the season.

Turkoglu was owed $12 million by the Magic, but by releasing him before a Jan. 7th deadline, only $6 million was guaranteed.

He thanked the Orlando Magic and the fans via twitter:

Playing in only 11 games last season due to injury, and served a 20 game suspension given to him by the NBA for testing positive for PED’s. Turkoglu also wants to prove that he still has the talent to help any team get to the next level.

His ball handling skills and veteran experience, could prove to be key down the stretch and in the playoffs for the Clippers.

With the return of one of the purest spot up shooters on the team in J.J. Redick, and Jamal Crawford as the two guard, this team needs all the firepower they can muster up. And Chris Paul still sidelined for about another four to five weeks due to a right shoulder injury, this was another intelligent move by the Clippers organization to stay competitive.

With the Western Conference in more gridlock than the 405 during rush hour, teams will seek any and every advantage in jocking for position for the top two seeds.

Turkoglu coming in with the Clippers second unit, can provide a level of high powered shooting and an advantage that can truly elevate this team, to go deep into the playoffs.
