But every NFL club always has the lingering offseason questions of who the team will keep, sign, or release. San Diego’s upcoming offseason is already raising some questions on how to continue to build upon a possible playoff contender.

Danario Alexander ChargersDanario Alexander is one of the main concerns in the Chargers organization this upcoming offseason, as he is set to hit the free agency market. Alexander has faced multiple injury-plagued seasons, but remains one of the most dangerous wideouts, besides Keenan Allen, when healthy on the roster.

He has suffered five separate knee injuries, and has yet to play more than 10 games in a season in his career. Alexander missed all of 2013 with am ACL tear.

Knowing the risks, the Chargers could also gamble and re-sign the 4-year veteran player, in hopes that he can become a nice complement to the rookie sensation of Allen. In the last nine games of 2012, Alexander recorded 37 receptions for 658 yards, and seven touchdowns. He has the ability to be great, but is hindered by injuries.

Another issue the Chargers will need to tackle is underperforming Derek Cox. He was constantly benched during the 2013 season, eventually being replaced by Richard Marshall. He signed a 4-year deal worth $20 million under general manager Tom Telesco. Releasing Cox can give the Chargers a $1.65 million cap relief and $4.25 million in cash. This could improve their odds of resigning unrestricted free agent Donald Butler.

Butler also is set to hit the free agency this offseason. How much will the Chargers fork out to keep him? The linebacker has been one of the biggest assets for the defense the past few years, and continues to play a role in creating turnovers. He can field massive offers, and re-signing him could cripple San Diego’s chance at making several splashes in free agency, let alone re-signing some of their other players.

Some other noteable free agents include RB Ronnie Brown, OL Rich Ohrnberger and Chad Rinehart, CB Richard Marshall, and SS Darrell Stuckey.

This offseason will be about finding ways to re-tool instead of rebuild, resigning key players from 2013, and upgrading in positions that are left vacant by departing players to other teams.

San Diego Chargers 2013-14 Season Something to Build On? http://sportspeak.org/san-diego-chargers-2013-14-season-something-to-build-on-2117/2014/01/17/ http://sportspeak.org/san-diego-chargers-2013-14-season-something-to-build-on-2117/2014/01/17/#comments Sat, 18 Jan 2014 04:39:56 +0000 http://sportspeak.org/?p=2117 After missing the playoffs since 2009, the San Diego Chargers ended their season on a positive note; even if they did not win it all.

New head coach Mike McCoy and Offensive Coordinator showed just how good the Chargers can be. The offense was ranked fourth in the season this year, and the defense stepped up late in the season, allowing only 257 pass yards a game in their last four contests.

Philip RiversThis was a measuring year for San Diego, as they made massive changes in the 2013 offseason. Removing both the head coach, and General manager this past offseason meant they were ready to seek improvements. This was also a big year for Philip Rivers to prove that he does belong in the NFL, and not on the sidelines.

They faired extremely well in a tough division against the Kansas City Chiefs, who were considered one of the best teams half way into the season, and the dangerous Denver Broncos with Peyton Manning. Splitting the series with the Broncos, and sweeping the Chiefs in the regular season proved that the Chargers could play with the very best, and win.

The Chargers even had one of the best rookie wideouts in Keenan Allen this year. Drafted in the 3rd round, Allen provided a sensational start to his NFL season for the Chargers, resulting in 1,046 yards and 8 touchdowns on 71 receptions. With more experience and practice with Rivers, the tandem can become twice as dangerous next year.

Making the divisional round shows promise for the Chargers, and also managing to keep the score close late against the Broncos proves the team is getting closer to becoming the team it was in 2009 when they went 13-3.

Another good offseason for the Chargers in the draft and potential free agent signings could put the team in a much better position to win it all.
